Dwell Hunting: Prefab housing becoming greener by the day
Priyanka Ohri | Nov 9 2009

There is this prefab home coming up in Newport Beach. So? Well, this prefab house is not an ordinary one, this one is a sustainably designed modular home by Living Homes. This very house is on the verge of becoming the first LEED Platinum Certified Home in Orange County. This green house is one of a kind in the genre of prefabs. Such creations are only making housing and prefab housing greener by the day. The confidence to attain the certification is being banked upon the features like recycled steel, recycled wood, bamboo siding, recycled glass tiles, photovoltaic panels, high performance windows with recycled frames, low-flow bathroom fixtures and gray water plumbing.

It’s a two-story house covering an area of 2,200 square feet. It has two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and a bonus room. The house came in four pre-constructed modules. This model, the LHKT 1.5, was designed by Philadelphia Architecture firm Kieran Timberlake and is meant for small urban housing. It is being offered for sale across the Nation at $275 per square foot installed. This does not include the land or the foundation.
